Antoine Brot 6 – June 27, 2026
Opening Saturday June 6 at 12-16
“For me, a new painting always begins with a trace, a drop, an accident, an unexpected gesture. I try to establish a rhythm and create a first layer. Already here is the possible end of the painting, not as something definitive, but as a horizon to be moved.
The first layer is often raw and energetic. Every form, every gesture requires a response. The result is a universe of ambiguous hybrid forms that I call chimeras.
Then follows a dialog between myself and the pictorial material, a meeting between the gesture and the surface, where gradually new layers are deposited in the ongoing experimentation.
Two ideas have shaped this approach. The first is a desire for the process not to follow a linear logic, but to be shaped by revisions, detours, like a riddle that develops over time, in a movement back and forth.
The second is play. Painting for me is play, not in the sense of entertainment, but as a free exploration. Here I feel close to the legacy of the Baroque, with its controlled abundance of forms and its love of details that divert the eye. I use motifs that in painting are often considered decorative, and try to charge them with new values.
For me, objective reality and imagined space are equivalent. With shifts of scale and contrasts, I try to force a state of confusion. The objects often float freely, as if weightless.
The subject, especially the body, is never fully present, but reinvents and redefines itself in a multitude of changing forms. It becomes a place of daydreams and constant ambiguity, where the manifest takes a back seat to the sensual.” Antoine Brot
