“Through textiles, I approach time as something physical and ongoing: stitch by stitch, weft by weft. The work is not just a method, but a way of thinking and being in relation to what surrounds me. I see my work as a dialog with the time we live in and with the material legacy we leave behind. I often start from already produced materials such as residual products and found garments that have circulated through industries, homes and everyday life. The movement of textiles from our homes and bodies out towards the geological; the millennial traces that a plastic-based industry leaves behind. In that movement, there is both fragility and resistance, and a desire to make visible how our most everyday actions are already woven into larger ecological contexts.”

In the exhibition Mot nästa evighet, Towards the Next Eternity, Josefin Tingvall presents new and earlier works in which textiles become a site for forward-looking, artistic archaeology. Fabrics created from industrial surplus yarns are shown together with experimental prints made from found garments, reshaped into human forms.
Based on already produced materials and colors that have circulated through homes and everyday life, Tingvall examines the connection between contemporary consumption and future living environments. When natural degradation processes meet plastic-based textiles, mixtures of color, microplastics and fragments are created. The exhibition depicts a possible future landscape where human traces intertwine with geological and biological processes. The textile serves as a tool to navigate this changing environment and makes visible the material heritage of the present.
Tingvall’s practice is rooted in a poetic and material investigation of the dynamics and limits of materials. Through weaving, experimental dyeing and the transformation of textile remnants, she creates works that move between the corporeal and the geological, between craft and speculative future.
Josefin Tingvall (b. 1993 in Arvika) is a textile artist based in Gothenburg. She is educated at Konstfack in Stockholm and HDK-Valand at the University of Gothenburg, and has also studied at the Royal Institute of Art. Her practice is project-based and rooted in a material investigation of the degradation, manipulation and limits of materials. Tingvall moves between techniques such as weaving, embroidery, experimental dyeing and visual coding, and tends to develop, merge and re-contextualize crafts in her projects. Through contemporary textiles, she explores themes such as the environment, fragility and change, and the role of humans in a world that holds more than them.
Tingvall’s recent solo exhibitions include Galleri Majnabbe (2025), Ahlbergshallen, Östersund (2023), Staffanstorps konsthall (2023), Luleå konsthall (2019). In 2021 she was awarded the Wettergren Foundation’s cultural scholarship and in 2016 she was a finalist in Young Swedish Design 2016. She has participated in the residencies Air Green, Norwegian Textile Artists (2022), IASPIS, Konstnärsnämnden, Stockholm, (2020) and Luleå ateljéstipendium (2018).
