Spring: Learning to walk with the latest injury

“During the violent events of the last few years, I have collected still images from news feeds, especially of faces at specific moments: the incomprehensible calm of a war journalist, the smile of a prisoner of war telling a joke, or the difficult-to-interpret expression of an injured demonstrator.
In the exhibition, these people have ended up in a spring landscape made up of fragments from Botticelli’s painting “Primavera” and Millais’ “Ophelia”. In this way, I wanted to give the people in the pictures some breathing space, to lift them out of violent situations and give them air. Not to erase the damage, but to give it another space.
My work moves between the poetic and the violent, with material taken from contemporary image flows. I work intuitively but am also driven by the question of what aesthetic rules govern contemporary art. By challenging the norms of abstraction, process and distance from the suffering of others, I try out different ways of building images and stories.”   Vera Holm

Vera Holm (b. 1993) is a Malmö-based artist working with image, sound and film. In the exhibition Spring: Learning to walk with the latest injury, she shows a series of paintings where news images are merged with fragments from the Renaissance.
Holm graduated with a BFA in Fine Art from HDK-Valand 2024 and has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Lund University.
